Kingston Heath GC 15th – Melbourne, Victoria.

In 1925 during his famous visit to the Lucky Country Dr Alister Mackenzie visited Kingston Heath to offer bunker advice and general guidance on course design. The resulting work is considered by many to be the finest course in Australia and no matter where you stand on that particular debate it is difficult to fault anything that the Scotsman and Sydney pro Dan Soutar created at Kingston Heath.

One of his most significant suggestions was to change the short par four 15th into a medium length par three. Originally the 15th was a short par four up and over the hill and down to a green by the 16th tee. MacKenzie labeled the previous design as a ‘blot on the course’ and set about making a new hole. His plan was to bring the green forward to the top of the dune and to create a short but demanding par three.

MacKenzie surrounded the beautifully contoured green with formidable bunkers and the result is a hole that is not particularly long but beneath its beauty lies a difficulty factor that will trouble golfers of all abilities.
