The 2010 Masters

After three lacklustre tournaments, the 2010 Masters proved that the magic of Augusta National is still very much alive and well. Even the build up to the tournament contained numerous storylines.

Tiger Woods was making his first competitive appearance since the affair scandal that destroyed his marriage and a Florida fire hydrant in late 2009. Phil Mickelson was battling with the news that his wife and mother had been diagnosed with breast cancer the previous year and Lee Westwood was hoping to continue his good form and and finally claim that elusive first Major win.

The tournament itself didn’t disappoint with the Saturday producing some of the best golf seen in Georgia for years. Mickelson was the star of the show with back to back eagles on 13 and 14 before incredibly nearly holing his third shot on 15 for another.

The great play and the drama continued into Sunday with Mickelson one ahead of Westwood heading into Amen Corner. On the par 5 13th Mickelson attempted to blast his way out of the pine straw through a gap in the trees in a situation where most golfers would just chip out and accept their punishment.

Mickelson is not ‘most golfers’ however and the stunning outcome and subsequent birdie led to the Californian claiming a three shot victory and a third Masters title.
