Jerry Pate and the Inaugural Players Championship

The TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course opened to huge expectations in 1982 and the first staging of the Players – at that time called the Tournament Players Championship – did not disappoint.

Jerry Pate was so delighted after striking his orange ball to 2 feet on 18 and holing out for the win that he threw PGA Tour commissioner Deane Beman and course architect Pete Dye into the green’s adjacent pond. He then jumped in himself for good measure, all before the presentation of the trophy!
