The 1982 US Open – Watson’s Chip at Pebble Beach

In the late 1960’s Stanford Student Tom Watson would frequently make the short drive down to Pebble Beach and imagine that he was competing with Jack Nicklaus for the US Open title. In 1982 Watson had the opportunity to live out his dream.

Tied after 70 holes, Watson hit his two iron through the back of the par 3 17th into the thick rough. His caddie Bruce Edwards told him to try and just get it in close to which Watson replied “Get it close? Hell, I’m going to make it”.

He then flopped the ball onto the green and watched it race toward the hole and into the cup. He added another birdie at 18 to seal his one and only US Open triumph.
