Standing on the par-4 18th tee in the final round, Phil Mickelson led by one and was on the verge of winning his third consecutive major and cementing his place as the best player in the world.
But then he suffered one of the most catastrophic meltdowns in US Open history: a wild sliced drive bounced off a corporate tent; a cut three-iron rebounded off the trunk of a tree, rolling mockingly back to his feet and his next attempt plugged in a greenside bunker making the required up and down almost impossible.
Australian Geoff Ogilvy had earlier put on a short game clinic over the back nine. He was unlucky with his approach to 18 spinning back off the putting surface but he got it up and down. Ogilvy thought this would have been good enough for a play-off at the very best – Cue the Chaos.
Firstly Colin Montgomery talked himself out of hitting the correct club, left it short and made double before Mickelson also made double. Both players finished a shot behind Ogilvy – only the second Australian US Open winner. – “I am such an idiot,” said Mickelson.
