The Golden Bear was adored in Scotland and he won twice at St Andrews in 1970 and 1978. In 2005 he appeared in the Open Championship for the final time and where better to say goodbye that at the home of golf.
As he walked up the 18th in the Friday afternoon sunshine, Nicklaus knew he was on the wrong side of the cut line and wouldn’t be around for the weekend. However, that didn’t stop him rolling back the years and holing out for a birdie. Everyone surrounding the green that day was on their feet to show their appreciation for arguably the greatest golfer of them all. The adoration wasn’t lost on Nicklaus or on playing partner and long-time rival Tom Watson as the pair left the green arm in arm and with tears in their eyes.
